Paramount Pictures’ “A Quiet Place: Day One” made one hell of a racket as it debuted at the domestic box office today.
After pulling a franchise-best $6.8 million in Thursday previews, the film is on track for a $20.5 million opening day (including those aforementioned previews).
In recent weeks the horror film was tracking to have a $40 million start, and now looks to be coming in ahead of expectations with estimates for the weekend now around $48 million.
Reviews for the $70 million budgeted film, both in terms of critics and audiences, are weaker than for the prior two movies. Nonetheless they’re still relatively positive with an 84% (7.1/10) from critics and a 70% (3.7/5) from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite the strong debut, the film will come in second to the third weekend of Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” looking to come in at $60 million – a drop of just 41% and one of the seven best third weekends ever.
By end of Sunday, the animated sequel will pass the $470 million domestic gross mark. Worldwide it has managed $863 million in its first two full weeks of release – surpassing the $859 million total gross of its predecessor.
Not fairing so well is Kevin Costner’s independently financed western “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1” which is headed for a $4.3-4.6 million take on Friday and a $12 million opening weekend overall.
That’s in line with the $14 million Costner’s last directorial effort, 2002’s “Open Range,” debuted to. However the new film came in at a costly budget which could be as high as $100 million. Reviews aren’t good either, just 38% (5.3/10) from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences are kinder at 71% (3.9/5).
Rounding out the top five will be “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” with $11 million for the three-day, and Bollywood title “Kalki 2898 AD” with $6.5 million for the weekend.
