“Hero” and “House of Flying Daggers” filmmaker Zhang Yimou will direct a new film adaptation of Chinese author Liu Cixin’s “The Three-Body Problem” novel trilogy.
The books run from the 1960s on Earth until the end of time in the distant fringes of the universe and deals with mankind’s first contact with an alien civilization.
Zhang, one of China’s most prolific and successful directors, is reportedly in the early stages of preparations on the film with the announcement of his involvement made yesterday by Enlight Media CEO Wang Changtian at a forum organized within the Shanghai International Film Festival.
The books have already been adapted as an animated series, a recent and high-profile live-action Netflix TV series, and as a radio drama.
The Netflix series had a scene of Cultural Revolution brutality at the start which may have contributed as to why the series has not been officially released there.
