“Top Gun: Maverick” star Miles Teller is set to star in a remake of the 1982 romantic drama “An Officer and a Gentleman” at Paramount Pictures.
“27 Dresses” writer Dana Fox wrote the most recent draft of remake following Matt Johnson writing the original draft.
The Taylor Hackford-directed original film centered on a troubled young man (Richard Gere) who enters the aviation officer candidate school.
He finds himself caught between a romance with a young female factory worker (Debra Winger) from the wrong side of the tracks, and the tutelage of a strict Marine sergeant (Louis Gossett Jr.).
The film was a massive hit when released, grossing over $130 million at the domestic box office and earning two Oscars – one for the song “Up Where We Belong” and one for Gossett Jr.’s performance.
It’s also mostly remembered these days for its ending where Gere, in full military dress uniform, walks into Winger’s workplace, scoops her off her feet and carries her out in a big romantic gesture.
Temple Hill is producing. Teller will next be seen with Anya Taylor-Joy in Scott Derrickson’s romantic action thriller “The Gorge” hitting Apple TV+ later this year.
