Putting the embarrassment of what happened at Warner Bros. around the new DCU behind him, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and his Seven Bucks Productions company have signed a first-look deal with The Walt Disney Company.
The multi-year agreement will see Johnson, and his producing partner Dany Garcia, develop films for both theatrical and streaming platforms for the media giant.
Johnson will potentially star in the projects, and Seven Bucks will collaborate across the whole of the Disney empire. This could include theme parks and even Lucasfilm.
Johnson and Disney have history. They have had good results with Moana, and less good with Jungle Cruise, but we can chalk that up to the pandemic. They first worked together all the way back on the Race to Witch Mountain remake.
According to the report from Variety via Yahoo News, their business ties run deep already, as Disney’s ESPN is a broadcast partner for the pro football league. That league is part-owned by Johnson and Garcia.
Reports about the Warner Bros. fallout now say that back in 2022 Johnson and Garcia met with David Zaslav on not only inserting Superman back into Black Adam, but according to insiders with knowledge of the meeting, it was to position Seven Bucks to run DC and replace then-chief Walter Hamada.
What happened after this is unclear, but judging by Johnson’s comments about a shift in the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe while out promoting Black Adam, the plans involving James Gunn including the complete shift in the direction of the DC IP and killing off the DCEU seemed to take Seven Bucks by surprise. They appeared to know nothing about the birth of the DCU.
Moana 2 is set for big things. The first movie remains a delight, and the latest trailer for the sequel broke all previous records for Disney animation trailers when it amassed 178 million views in just 24 hours.
A live-action version of Moana is also set for a summer 2026 release, and Johnson will reprise his role. That live action remake is set to open July 10th 2026.
