Netflix revealed in its data dumps that in 2023, two shows dominated the respective halves of each year with the most viewership for one of its original series.
In the first half, it was “The Shield” producer Shawn Ryan’s political thriller “The Night Agent,” in the latter, it was the live-action “One Piece” TV series.
Both shows were quickly renewed for second seasons. The former began production in New York, Washington, DC, and Thailand in February, while the latter is gearing up for a South Africa shoot.
Now, Deadline reports that Ryan has signed a major four-year overall deal with the streamer and will start after Ryan’s current overall deal with Sony TV expires at the end of October.
With a deal in place, Netflix is reportedly proceeding with opening a writer’s room next month for a third season of the show. No formal green light has been handed out yet, but this marks a good sign.
That’s not all, though. The deal with Ryan is being seen as one that could see Netflix pursue potential spin-offs and build out a universe based on the show.
The first season remains high on the streamer’s Top 10 Most Popular English-Language Series list to date – clocking in at #6 between limited series sensations “The Queen’s Gambit” at #5 and “Fool Me Once” at #7.
