Toho’s highly acclaimed “Godzilla Minus One” made an abrupt and long overdue jump to both VOD and SVOD platforms on Saturday, and the results broke a record.
For the first time ever, a film that is both streaming on Netflix and available on VOD is simultaneously #1 on both charts – first hitting the top of Netflix charts today and VOD charts on its first day of release. It’s especially surprising as the release was unannounced – news of it breaking as the film began rolling out on services.
The film itself was released in early December to a significant North American gross of $56 million and an Oscar win for its visual effects.
However, because of agreements and concern about confusion with Legendary’s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” hitting in March, it led to a highly unusual six-month window before any home availability.
That’s longer than even Christopher Nolan got with “Oppenheimer” which took four months to hit VOD (but took even longer, seven, to hit SVOD via Peacock).
This was combined with the lack of any pre-announcement of the release or that Netflix had even acquired the rights for multiple territories including the United States. Even Netflix wasn’t touting the film’s release on its service until it began actually streaming it.
The color version of the film is on Netflix in many major territories and VOD platforms in some territories. The black-and-white version is on VOD platforms in some territories, and is coming to Netflix later in the year.
