Netflix will launch its French shark movie “Under Paris” on its service on June 5th, but the film could be pulled almost immediately due to a legal dispute.
“Under Paris” sees the French city hosting the World Triathlon Championships on the Seine for the first time. A brilliant scientist learns from a young environmental activist that a large shark is swimming deep in the river and they must stop the potential bloodbath.
Deadline reports that a legal case claims the film steals from another writer’s original idea. Said writer/director is Vincent Dietschy who alleges that the new film was developed without his knowledge from an original idea he registered with France’s rights management body SACD in 2011.
That idea was “Silure” which is about a giant, carnivorous catfish that wreaks terror on the river Seine.
Dietschy reportedly indicates that the film’s producers gained information about his idea after he pitched it to an agent in 2014. Further, a development dossier featuring a lengthy treatment started to circulate among other producers in 2015.
The producers have subsequently refuted Dietschy’s claims and plan to defend themselves. An initial hearing is scheduled for June 14th which will pass judgement on a legal request for the film’s release to be suspended.
