With no major new film releases this week, George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” are battling it out again for the U.S. box-office this weekend.
This time the lasagne-loving cat looks to come out on top with Deadline reporting the second weekend for both films will see “Garfield” racking up over $12 million with “Furiosa” close behind with $11 million.
“Garfield” already beat the “Mad Max” spin-off on Friday, taking $3.3 million to the latter’s $3 million. By end of Sunday, both films will have reportedly racked up around $50 million domestically each.
The third weekend of “IF” will take third with a $2.6 million Friday haul leading to a $9.8 million weekend haul.
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” will be fourth with $2.1 million Friday and a $7.8 million projection for the weekend. That film is pacing 7% ahead of its predecessor “War for the Planet of the Apes” at the same point in its cycle.
Crunchyroll/Sony’s animated sports film “Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle” landed $2 million on Friday and is expected to come in fifth for the weekend with $4 million.
IFC’s extreme indie horror movie “In a Violent Nature” is also looking to do well with an estimated $2.2 million for the weekend.
