No ifs, no buts. Moana is a tremendous animated movie and a top-tier Disney production. The songs are on point, the voice casting is perfect, it’s funny and sweet and uplifting, and everything a family movie should be. It is like it comes from a different time when you view most of what Disney is pushing these days, and it will be nine years old by the time the sequel drops.
The official teaser trailer for Moana 2 has dropped, giving us our first real glimpse, and the new adventures of Moana and Maui. Auli‘i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson return to the lead roles.
In this installment, after receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must embark on a perilous journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters.
Disney had originally planned this as a series for Disney+, way back when Disney+ was brand new. However, they realized the value of the franchise and opted to rework it as a second movie. Moana 2 is directed by Dave Derrick Jr. with music by Abigail Barlow, Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina. Lin-Manuel Miranda is not returning for this sequel.
A live-action adaptation of the first movie is also in the works with Dwayne Johnson back as Maui for that, too.
Moana grossed $248.7 million in the U.S. and Canada, and $438.4 million in other countries, for a worldwide total of $687.2 million. It remains one of Disney Animation’s biggest modern hits.
It was written and directed by Disney legends Ron Clements and John Musker who had started working on an adaptation of Terry Pratchett’s Mort, but problems with acquiring the necessary film rights prevented them from continuing with that project. To avoid a recurrence of that issue, they pitched three original ideas. One of which came from Musker’s fascination with Polynesian culture.
The rest is history.
Moana 2 sets sail in November this year.
