Disney has premiered the official teaser trailer for “Moana 2,” the upcoming sequel to its celebrated 2016 animated hit.
The film takes audiences on an expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers. Auli‘i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson reprise their Moana and Maui roles respectively.
After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.
Disney previously revealed that the project was originally planned as a TV series, but early on the company opted to retool it and produce a second film.
The new movie will be directed by Dave Derrick Jr. with music by winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina (Lin-Manuel Miranda is not returning).
The original film was a major success, making over $680 million at the box office and crossing 1 billion hours streamed on Disney+ last year.
A live-action adaptation of the first film is also in the works which will see Dwayne Johnson reprise his Maui role there too.
