“Blue Beetle” director Ángel Manuel Soto has been set to direct the long-gestating film adaptation of the hit video game franchise “Just Cause” which has landed at Universal Pictures.

In addition, Kelly McCormick and David Leitch (“The Fall Guy,” “Nobody”) will produce through their 87North banner. Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg and Timothy I. Stevenson of Story Kitchen are also producing.

The famously over-the-top games from Square Enix and Avalanche Studios follow Rico Rodriguez, aka the Scorpion, a black ops agent who carries out deadly missions for the U.S. government which revolve around destabilising rogue nations from within and turning the bad guys against each other.

The first game was set on the fictional South American Republic of San Esperito, the second around the Indonesian islands of Panau, the third the Mediterranean archipelago of Medici, and the fourth in a the South American nation Solís which suffers extreme weather conditions.

Rodriguez frequently uses a grappling hook, wingsuit and retractable parachute to perform death-defying stunts that utterly defy the laws of physics – from hijacking fighter planes in mid-air to boss fights that take place on the back of freshly launched nuclear missiles or in the crater of an active volcano.

The series earned strong reviews for its fun, destruction physics and impressive open world scale. Universal reportedly sees this as another potential game-to-film adaptation that could be a success following their luck with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s” last year.

Soto is currently in pre-production on the Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista-led action movie “The Wrecking Crew” for Amazon MGM. He is also co-writing a “Transformers” spinoff at Paramount.
