Matt Tolmach, who has produced all the “Spider-Man” films since Andrew Garfield’s first in 2012, says the upcoming “Kraven the Hunter” is good enough to warrant repeat viewing.
In a recent interview with Collider, Tolmach was asked about the film’s release date push a few weeks back. Sony had originally slated it for late Summer before choosing instead to push it to a mid-December slot.
It marked just the latest delay of a film that has seen several date changes from its originally planned January 2023 release. Tolmach says the new date means it won’t have to fight to stand out amongst other established franchises:
“Kraven moved to Christmas because we’re excited about it and Christmas is the best release period there is, when you get people with time to go back to the movies over and over again. That was a real reflection of how the studio felt about the movie. We’re really excited. But that’s a great move that reflects just the feeling about the movie.”
The film will come in the wake of several other high profile flops by Sony based on Marvel properties like “Morbius” and more recently “Madame Web”, but will also follow “Venom: The Last Dance” which is expected to do well.
The R-rated “Kraven” boasts a budget reportedly said to be up to $130 million, more than what the new “Venom” will cost, and so far has seen one trailer release that scored a reception similar to past Sony-Marvel film efforts.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson leads the cast as Russian immigrant and big-game hunter Sergei Kravinoff who goes on a mission to prove that he is the greatest hunter in the world.
Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Russell Crowe, Christopher Abbott, Alessandro Nivola and Levi Miller also star in the film helmed by J.C. Chandor (“All is Lost,” “A Most Violent Year”).
“Kraven the Hunter” opens in cinemas on December 13th.
