A24 is reportedly making an eight-figure deal to acquire U.S. rights to filmmaker Ruben Östlund’s next social satire effort “The Entertainment System is Down” reports Deadline.

Keanu Reeves, Kirsten Dunst, Daniel Brühl, Nicholas Braun and Samantha Morton star in the film set on a long-haul flight where the entertainment systems fail, and an eclectic group of international passengers are forced to face the horror of being bored.

Dunst and Brühl will reportedly play a doomed married couple with her having discovered in-flight that he’s been having multiple affairs. The production will take place over 70 days on a studio lot with Östlund and his producer Erik Hemmendorff having purchased a real-life Boeing 747 for the film.

Östlund already has a release plan in mind for the film and is hoping for a debut at Cannes in 2026. He is currently selling the film at the Cannes market.

Talking to press, he says it will be a challenging shoot that’s “99% in a closed set for over 70 days” and will “push the acting to levels not seen in a long time.”

Östlund broke through a decade ago at Cannes with the dark comedy “Force Majeure” before winning the Palme d’Or twice for 2017’s “The Square” and 2022’s “Triangle of Sadness”.
