Skydance and Mattel Films have reportedly closed a deal with “Extraction” director Sam Hargrave to direct a live-action film based on Mattel’s iconic toy car brand “Matchbox”.

“Prey” and “The Family Plan” writer David Coggeshall will team with “Banshee” and “Warrior” series creator Jonathan Tropper to pen the script.

The toy was invented in 1953 by automotive enthusiast Jack Odell to solve a challenge for his daughter – she was allowed to take a toy to school only if it was small enough to fit in a matchbox.

Thus a brand was born. Known for high standards of authenticity, the brand continues on around the world 70 years later with Matchbox cars sold every second.

Whilst story specifics are under wraps, Hargrave is known for his complex action choreography and filming techniques which suggests the kind of tone the company is going for.

Robbie Brenner, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger will produce.

Hargrave is also slated to produce “Stay Frosty” for Warners, and will direct the pilot episode and executive produce the Apple TV+ series “The Last Frontier:’ about a group of prison transport escapees that descend on an Alaskan town.
