Ryan Gosling has revealed that the team behind last week’s release “The Fall Guy” already has sequel plans well underway. The question is, will they get a chance to make it?
The loose take on the Lee Majors TV series sees Gosling playing a film stuntman, coming off a near career-ending fall, asked to go on a mission to find the missing lead to a big-budget action film he’s been recruited for – the directorial debut of his ex-girlfriend (Emily Blunt).
Boasting a sizable $130-150 million budget, the movie opened to an estimated $28.5 million over the three-day weekend domestically. That’s the worst Summer film season kick-off in nearly two decades.
Speaking to Fast Company, the Oscar-nominated Gosling was asked about the potential for a sequel and he revealed that once they were done making this film, the sequel “sort of wrote itself” and it sounds like there’s already been some work of some sort on it:
“Oh yeah. We already – I mean, we love these characters so much that we wanted to know, just for ourselves, what happens to Colt and [Emily Blunt’s character] Jody after the movie ends? What’s the next phase for them? And we know exactly what it is. So hopefully the audience wants to know, too.
The sequel sort of wrote itself. We already know [the story] intimately. We’re just hoping that people like this movie enough that we get to keep telling the story of these characters. We love them so much, and we love this world, and I feel confident that we can do it.
Going for the film is that both critical and audience reception has been quite good and the hope is the film will have some legs. Even if it doesn’t, as it’s a Universal title it will likely hit PVOD fast where it could really do good business.
