Studiocanal and Editions Albert Rene have signed an exclusive development agreement that will see a new live-action “Asterix” film based on beloved French comic book character.
Created in 1959 by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo, the series follows the adventures of Asterix and Obelix and their friends who live in a small village in Gaul, the only outpost of resistance against Julius Caesar’s mighty Roman empire.
The characters became a cultural phenomenon around the globe with around 400 million Asterix books sold and printed in 130 languages and dialects.
Five prior live-action films have been made from 1999 through to last year’s “Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom” along with ten animated films.
The project is separate from an Asterix 3D animated series by French director, screenwriter and actor Alain Chabat which is due on Netflix next year.
No details on the new film’s story, cast or director are out.
