Bethesda Game Studios is known for taking its time with its first-party games. Its last release was “Starfield” last year which launched to a bit of a mixed reception.
That came after a five-year gap from its last release, “Fallout 76”, in 2018, which made headlines for its negative reception at launch.
However, with the successful launch of the “Fallout” TV series on Amazon, interest in the franchise is sky-high right now, which has led to strong sales of old titles and a rush of new players to “Fallout 76”.
However, Bethesda Game Studios has no new product in regards to the franchise in the works right now – the company’s next big work is “The Elder Scrolls VI” which isn’t expected until 2026 at the earliest, more likely 2027-28. If “Fallout 5” doesn’t go into production until after, that game won’t arrive until the 2030s.
A new report from Xbox insider Jez Corden (via ComicBook.com) says Bethesda’s owner Microsoft Gaming is well aware of the issue and is working to release a new “Fallout” title faster.
Corden indicates that according to his sources, Microsoft is currently “formulating plans on how to get the next Fallout sooner rather than later” but doesn’t go into detail about how said plans will be achieved.
One way could be an expansion of the studio to work on two games simultaneously, another handing development off to another studio such as “Fallout: New Vegas” developer Obsidian Entertainment.
Either way this remains very much a rumor for now. “Fallout 76” is still pulling in strong numbers since the TV show’s launch with 49,026 concurrent players on Steam (via SteamDB) as of yesterday – up from around 8,000 or so daily players the title was doing in March.
