According to a report in Deadline, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, and the previously rumored Jodie Comer are all now locked for 28 Years Later.

This long-time-coming sequel to the original two movies – 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later – is set up at Sony Pictures as the first part in a new trilogy. Original writing and direction duo Alex Garland and Danny Boyle return to the same duties this time around.

The next two movies are also already being written and the plan is for the first two movies to be shot back-to-back from this summer. After the first movie, Boyle will hand over directing duties to Nia DaCosta (Candyman).

Cillian Murphy has been rumored to return, but this is not confirmed.

Outside of the title confirming the timeframe, and being pretty sure it will feature a resurgence of the zombie/not zombie-inducing Rage virus, very little is known about the planned outline for the story. To be honest, it’s not too hard to figure out at least the basics here.

Murphy is definitely executive producing with Boyle, Garland, Bernie Bellew, Andrew Macdonald, and Peter Rice as producers.

For the original, Garland took inspiration from George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead film series and John Wyndham’s 1951 novel The Day of the Triffids.

Garland said his creative moment came when he was playing Resident Evil in 1996, which reminded him how much he loved zombies and made him wonder why nobody was making zombie movies anymore. He built out the idea and then pitched it as a zombie movie to Danny Boyle while they were making The Beach.
