Marvel has big things riding on Fantastic Four. Along with the appearance of X-Men in the MCU, these are the high-profile, big-name properties that will need to step in to fill the void as established characters age out, are killed off, or the actors walk away. One of the challenges frequently mentioned these days when talking about any comic book movie adaptation is “Superhero Fatigue”.
After fifteen years and sometimes three movies and several TV shows a year, is everyone just sick of it?
Stranger Things actor Joseph Quinn is set to play Johnny Storm/Human Torch in Fantastic Four. He dismissed “Superhero Fatigue” and says the movie they are working on will be very different to what you have seen before:
“I think that with the story of the Fantastic Four, it feels like we want to get this right. There are aspects of it that are very different to other Marvel films. That felt very compelling to me.
Again, going back to who’s involved, Matt, of course, the director, I think is brilliant, and the cast, and I’ve read it and the script is brilliant. It’s really brilliant. I’m delighted to have this opportunity.
Superhero movies are movies about people, and if we’re invested in the people and the characters and the peril and the spectacle, then that’s why people go to the theaters to watch films. We’re not just in a penny; we’re in for a pound with this one. We’re going to go for it.”
Quinn joins Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing, and Julia Garner as the “Shalla-Bal” version of the Silver Surfer in the movie.
It has been rumored that some of the movie will take place in the 1960s.
Matt Shakman (WandaVision) directs the film from a screenplay by Josh Friedman, based on a draft by Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer. Fantastic Four starts filming any day now for a mid-2025 release.
Meanwhile, another rumor is sweeping the internet. Is Sam Raimi about to return to the very character that he helped kickstart the genre with? He directed the Tobey Maguire-led Spider-Man trilogy from 2002-2007.
Raimi returned to the world of Marvel with Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and it was said to be a happy set, with a good relationship in place with the producers and the studio.
A report from World of Reel says that no director is attached, but Sam Raimi is now officially in the running for the director’s gig on the fourth Tom Holland-led Spider-Man movie.
He will have worked with Holland on the Doctor Strange sequel, but Holland’s cameo was eventually cut from the finished movie.
There have, apparently, been talks.
