The Sundance Film Festival was formed in 1978 by Sterling Van Wagenen, head of Robert Redford’s company Wildwood Enterprises, Inc, John Earle, and Cirina Hampton-Catania of the Utah Film Commission. Every year, for over 40 years, it has been held in Park City, Utah.
Now, according to a report in The Playlist, it may be moving. Acting CEO Amanda Kelso and Festival Director Eugene Hernandez have said a process to potentially move the festival is underway in time for the 2027 event.
A Request for Information (RFI) is open to potential new cities until May 1st and places interested in hosting the festival can get in touch. They have specifically asked Utah to submit a proposal. The 2025 and 2026 events will remain as-is. Any potential new venue will be announced in Q1 2025.
The drivers behind any potential switch are down to a general reduction in corporate sponsorship across the board, as the entire industry tightens its belt. Government subsidies for such events in general are also being cut back.
SXSW in Austin, Texas has started to hog the limelight away from Sundance in recent years, so they are looking to change things up.
The 2025 festival will run from January 23rd-February 2nd.
