Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook and Lionsgate Television are teaming up to develop an English-language TV series version of his iconic 2003 South Korean revenge thriller “Oldboy”.

The series plans to be a new adaptation of the story which was loosely based on a magna with the same name. It marks the second English-language take on the property following 2013’s Spike Lee-directed film remake starring Josh Brolin.

Park directed and co-wrote the original film which follows a man who is kept imprisoned in a room for fifteen years without knowing why or by whom. Upon his release, must find his captor in five days.

Though standalone, the film also marked the middle entry in Park’s ‘Vengeance trilogy’ which includes “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance” and “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance”.

Park also directed such films as “The Handmaiden,” “Stoker” and most recently “Decision to Leave” along with producing “Snowpiercer” in its film and TV incarnations. He also directed the mini-series “The Little Drummer Girl” and wrote/directed HBO’s new limited series “The Sympathizer”.

Scott Herbst, EVP and Head of Scripted Development, Lionsgate Television says in a statement: “This series adaptation of Oldboy will feature the raw emotional power, iconic fight scenes and visceral style that made the film a classic.”
