Guy Richie’s new movie, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, is set to release next week. However, not in the UK or Canada, and potentially everywhere else.
Lionsgate has produced the movie and it will have a theatrical release in the US. However, Prime Video signed an “eight-figure” deal for international rights. According to Yahoo!, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare will go straight to streaming in the UK and Canada.
If that “eight-figure” sum is to be believed, then Amazon would rather have more subscribers than bums in seats at the cinema. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare looks like a big-screen experience though. We posted the trailer for it here.
Cinema vs. Streaming
There is a bigger debate here, but I’m finding myself less and less drawn to the cinema these days. Firstly, it’s expensive, about £12 a ticket for me here in the UK. Don’t even bother looking at the food there without a remortgage deal. Then you have at least 20 to 30 minutes of ads and trailers before the movie starts. You can’t pause it to have a pee. And there is usually someone playing on their phone the entire time.
At home, I have a decent-sized TV, and a comfortable couch and I can watch anything I like in peace and quiet. I have snacks and a bucket by the sofa, so I don’t even have to move (j/k). One of the services I use has zero adverts, sponsorships, or anything else to disturb the movie.
I would like to see The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, but I was going to wait until streaming anyway. I will go to the cinema for a huge movie like Dune 2, but for something like this, I’m happy to wait. I guess I don’t have to now.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is in US theatres on the 19th of April, and on streaming everywhere else, I think, the details are sketchy.
