After the shocking double shooting on the set of Rust back in 2021, the on-set armorer and weapons handler Hannah Gutierrez-Reed has been sentenced to eighteen months in prison.

26-year-old Gutierrez-Reed loaded the gun for actor Alec Baldwin before it was fired. In the process, it killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the film set and injured another.

She was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in March and the sentencing has now been handed down. It is the maximum possible sentence.

She was found not guilty of a second charge, tampering with evidence.

65-year-old Baldwin also faces a manslaughter trial starting this July and he has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The judge in New Mexico ruled that Gutierrez-Reed’s actions on the set of Rust constitute a:

“…serious, violent offense, committed in a physically violent manner…”

The prosecution case implied that Gutierrez-Reed had failed to ensure the weapon was only loaded with dummy rounds. This failure was due to proper precautions not being taken to keep dummy and live rounds sufficiently apart on set. Live bullets had apparently become mixed in with dummy rounds.

Baldwin’s trial will be high profile when it kicks off in the summer.
