Last year Michael Douglas revealed at the premiere of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” that he’d only come back for a fourth film in that series as “long as I can die”.
It turns out he wanted out of the MCU earlier than that – actually he wanted to be killed off in ‘Quantumania’ in a great big ball of visual effects.
Douglas has played Hank Pym across the trio of “Ant-Man” films and had a small cameo in “Avengers: Endgame”. Whilst he was a major part of the first film, he was more on the sidelines in the sequel.
In an interview on “The View” this week to promote his Apple TV+ historical drama series “Franklin,” he explained his request to be knocked off in the third film:
“[Getting killed off] actually was my request for the third one. I said I’d like to have a serious [death], with all these great special effects. There’s got to be some fantastic way where I can shrink to an ant size and explode, whatever it is. I want to use all those effects. But, that was on the last one. Now, I don’t think I’m going to show up [for a fourth].”
Pym survived the events of ‘Quantumania’ but the future of the “Ant-Man” franchise is unclear in the wake of Quantumania’s poor showing both critically and commercially.
