By Chris Hemsworth recently revealed to Entertainment Tonight (via Variety) that he tried hard to land a role in an upcoming Kevin Costner-directed feature only for Costner to cast himself as the character instead.
The Aussie hunk didn’t reveal the name of the film, but did say it was a “small story about a man and a woman” and was “abstract and interesting” with the lead male role being that of a horse wrangler.
From the comments he made, it’s not Costner’s sprawling four-film western epic “Horizon” which will release its first two entries this Summer. Costner will film the next two should those first two prove successful.
The referred to project seems to be some sort of unannouced film Costner is linked to. The “Thor” star tells the outlet:
“There was a movie, a script that I’d read and loved and was like, ‘I want to get that,’ and then someone said, ‘Kevin Costner has that [role]’. I’d love [to have] him as a director. I was like, ‘Goddamnit!’ [I spent] an hour the other day trying to convince him, and he was like, ‘I’m doing it, kid.’ Didn’t work. I didn’t get the part.”
After those comments, the outlet got in touch with Costner himself to ask about the story, and he confirms he turned down Hemsworth and explains why:
“It’s a love story, but as long as I’m still young enough to play it, I’ll play it. Chris will have to wait his turn. [Hemsworth]’s so handsome, and he’s so good. He’s going to have to go find his [own] love story. [But] I’m glad he likes this one. If I reach a moment where I [don’t] think I could do that, I would [reach out]. He’s certainly one of our great leading men right now.”
Costner recently spoke with the outlet about his hopes of coming back for the final run of “Yellowstone” saying: “I’d like to be able to do it but we haven’t been able to… So how it works out – I hope it does – but they’ve got a lot of different shows going on. Maybe it will. Maybe this will circle back to me. If it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I’d love to do it.”
