At CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Paramount dropped some surprising news. Back in January they teased a new Star Trek movie. Now they have confirmed it is going ahead, and it is happening much sooner than anyone thought.
Well-regarded British TV director Toby Haynes (Andor, Black Mirror) had already been locked in as a director, with Seth Grahame-Smith (The Last American Vampire) writing for J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot production house.
The twist was that this is an origin story set several decades before the 2009 film reboot. As always, they feel the need to go backwards.
We have already had Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek 2009, Star Trek: Discovery, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. All tell various stories of things before they became that thing we all like. So we struggle to see the point of this.
But Haynes and Grahame-Smith are an intriguing combo.
According to a report on TrekCore, CinemaCon was told that the project will shoot later this year for a 2025 release, and it is locked on the published slate. So we may be closer to a Trek movie than we have been for nearly a decade.
The KelvinVerse is set in the late 2250s/early 2260s. That suggests this movie would be set post-Enterprise and pre-2009, in the alternative Kelvin timeline. If this is true, it could deal with the expansion of the Federation.
