Amazon MGM Studios has been crowing over the success of Road House. The remake of the well-loved, almost cult, Patrick Swayze 80s punch-em-up has been a massive success for them.

Amazon says Road House had its biggest global movie launch, and that over 50 million households have seen it since it debuted on March 21st. To put that into context, about 10 million people in the US were estimated to have gone to see Barbie.

Amazon doesn’t usually announce numbers like this and hasn’t given their workings, such is the opaque world of viewer calculation in streaming, but it has clearly made an impression on them and their viewership. Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, released a statement:

“The groundbreaking, successful debut of Road House is a testament to the hard work and commitment from the entire Road House filmmaking team and the film’s cast led by the phenomenal Jake Gyllenhaal… It’s great to see the film taking off with both fans of the iconic original as well as a huge turnout from new audiences.”

In the film, Jake Gyllenhaal stars as ex-UFC fighter Elwood Dalton who is hired to be the bouncer of a troubled bar in the Florida Keys. The film got some press in the run-up to release, with creatives thinking it should be going to theaters.

We reviewed it as average, and I personally thought it felt a bit lightweight, leaving out or only touching on most of the elements that made the Swayze original so much dumb fun. However, I was entertained for the duration.
