Though she really broke through with the “Twilight” franchise, actress Kristen Stewart has essentially stayed away from such fare ever since – preferring more auteur-driven arthouse vehicles.
Even when she has dabbled back into studio fare, such as with “Charlie’s Angels,” there’s an obvious decision there for her to do something with a filmmaker she likes and an auteur-driven project with a strong feminine message.
Out promoting her new film “Love Lies Bleeding” which has been drawing rave reviews, IndieWire asked if she’d ever sign on for a Marvel project.
Her answer is not expected, but it turns out there may be one possibility:
“I will likely never do a Marvel movie. That sounds like a f—ing nightmare, actually. If Greta Gerwig asked me to do a Marvel movie, then I would do it.”
The MCU has famously hired some known auteurs in the past, only for the Marvel assembly line to sand off and depersonalise their works (eg. “Captain Marvel,” “Eternals”) that they could’ve been helmed by anyone.
To date it has been the comedy auteurs like James Gunn and Taika Waititi who have most been able to make their style work (albeit toned down) within the confines of the system. Stewart says she’s not a fan of said confines:
“The system would have to change. You’d have to put so much money and so much into one person, and it doesn’t happen. So therefore what ends up happening is this algorithimic, weird experience where you can’t feel personal at all about it.”
Stewart will soon be making her own narrative feature directing debut in “The Chronology Of Water,” prepping the film after years of seeking producers who will back her desire for full creative control.
