Former “Doctor Who” showrunner Steven Moffat is set to return to the series with The BBC announcing Moffat will write an episode due to air as part of Ncuti Gatwa’s first season as The Doctor this year.
Moffat came to many people attention during Russell T. Davies previous tenure as showrunner in the Christopher Eccleston/David Tennant years.
Moffat served as a writer on at least 1-2 episodes per season, resulting in the creation of some of the most lauded episodes of the program to this day including “The Empty Child”/”The Doctor Dances” two-parter, “The Girl in the Fireplace,” “Blink” and the “Silence in the Library”/”Forest of the Dead” two-parter.
After Davies exited, Moffat took over as showrunner during the Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi years of the program. He’s also famous for co-creating “Sherlock” and creating/producing shows like “Jekyll,” “Dracula,” “Coupling,” and “The Time Traveler’s Wife” along with co-writing the film “The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn”. In a statement Moffat says:
“I am in fact writing an episode of the series of Doctor Who. Exactly like I said I never would. What can I tell you? There was begging, there was pleading but finally Russell agreed to let me have another go – so long as I got out of his garden.
Working with old friends and a brand new Doctor I couldn’t be happier. Sorry I was a bit reticent on the subject for so long. It was all part of an elaborate plan that would have delighted millions but at the last minute I forgot what it was.”
“Doctor Who” returns with a simultaneous global premiere on Disney+ on May 10th and BBC iPlayer in the UK on May 11th.
