Filmmaker Michael Mann has confirmed to Radio France that not only is the sequel to 1995’s “Heat” his next film, he is already deep in pre-production mode on the project.
Last year, Mann teased he had hoped to shoot the film in 2024 and was finishing up the script for the work which serves as both a prequel and sequel to the original.
Now he’s saying it’s “definitely” his next film, with The Economic Times, adding that filming is already eyeing a Summer 2024 start.
Events in the film are expected to jump between 1988 and 2000, seven years before and five years after the events of 1995 in the film’s Los Angeles setting.
The update comes as Mann is coming off the big disappointment of “Ferrari,” the $95 million-budgeted film which ended up grossing just $44 million worldwide and failed to garner any awards buzz – though the critics seemed to like it.
Adam Driver is expected to take on the role of Robert De Niro’s Neil MacCauley. Austin Butler and Ana de Armas have also been rumored for roles.
