Sony has reportedly paused production of its PlayStation VR2 headset just one year after launch according to a new report at Bloomberg.
The outlet indicates PlayStation VR2 shipments have been getting progressively smaller each quarter since launch a year ago and Sony has now paused production altogether as it must deal with a backlog of unsold units.
Unlike the PS Portal, which remains popular enough to be out of stock in many places six months after launch, there is no shortage VR2 headsets.
The report cites research firm IDC which tracks deliveries to retailers and indicate there’s a surplus of assembled PS VR2 headsets throughout Sony’s supply chain.
Sony has yet to officially confirm how many units it has sold to date beyond a reported claim of selling around 600,000 units during its first six weeks of availability.
Very notably, Sony’s first-party games support for PlayStation VR2 has been slim. Last month Sony confirmed that it’s testing PlayStation VR2 compatibility with PC in order to let its users have access to more games.
