Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures, still flying high on the success of “Dune: Part Two,” are set for another hit over the Easter weekend with “Godzilla x. Kong: The New Empire”.
The fifth film in their MonsterVerse saga is currently tracking to open at $45-50 million according to short-term projections, a considerably better number than the pandemic-impacted opening of “Godzilla vs. Kong” in 2021, which debuted at $31.6 million over three days.
Despite that soft start, “Godzilla vs. Kong” made $470 million worldwide and has remained the highest-grossing day-and-date streaming theatrical title ever. It’s expected with the new film the overall Monsterverse franchise will pass the $2 billion total mark.
The new movie pits Kong and Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence – and our own. It also explores more of the histories of these Titans, their origins, Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings.
Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, Kaylee Hottle, Alex Ferns and Fala Chen co-star in the Adam Wingard-directed film, which was shot in the back half of 2022.
The film will open after the release of Gil Kenan’s “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” which opens this coming Friday and is currently expected to pull in between $35-47 million on its opening weekend, on par with its predecessor “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” which debuted to $44 million in 2021.
