Marcus Lehto, who co-created the “Halo” franchise whilst at Bungie, founded Electronic Arts studio Ridgeline Games in 2021.
Whilst there, Lehto was directing a new single-player “Battlefield” game. Then last month, he abruptly left the studio on his own accord.
Shortly after EA confirmed it had closed Ridgeline Games entirely, a move that Lehto responded to on X saying he was: “Gut punched to see EA lay off my team.”
Now, Lehto has commented on the overall experience on X saying the company’s closure was a part of the sweeping layoffs industry-wide and having some choice words about his former employer:
“Not been saying much here since I don’t have anything positive to say about EA, my recent departure, and how so many, including my team, are suffering due to the industry sweeping layoffs.”
The game designer reportedly then liked responses from fans, including one post which dubbed EA as being “the epitome of corporate greed”.
The single-player “Battlefield” project will now reportedly be completed by “Need for Speed” studio Criterion Games.
The comments come in the wake of staff cuts at EA and a shift in focus towards “owned IP, sports, and massive online communities” – resulting in a single-player Mandalorian game being cancelled.
