Oscilloscope Laboratories has premiered the first trailer for “Wildcat,” a new biopic about famed author Flannery O’Connor that’s been directed by acclaimed actor Ethan Hawke.
Ethan’s daughter and “Stranger Things” breakout Maya Hawke stars as O’Connor as she struggles to publish her first novel deals with her diagnosis of lupus (which took her father) and tries to deal with the strained relationship with her mother.
A devout Catholic from Georgia, O’Connor was famed for essentially inventing the sub-genre ‘Southern Gothic’ which boasted a dark tone and dark humor as it told offbeat stories about the American South and various grotesque characters who move through it – all with a distinct lack of sentimentality. Issues of disability and race also come heavily into play in her works.
Her most famous works were her short story collections “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” and “Everything That Rises Must Converge” along with the novel “Wise Blood”. Her posthumously compiled Complete Stories won the 1972 U.S. National Book Award for Fiction and has been the subject of enduring praise.
Philip Ettinger, Rafael Casal, Cooper Hoffman, Steve Zahn, Vincent D’Onofrio, Alessandro Nivola, Christine Dye, Willa Fitzgerald, and Levon Hawke co-star.
Ethan Hawke also produced and co-wrote the film with Shelby Gaines. Ryan Hawke, Joe Goodman, Cory Pyke, Kevin Downes, Jon Erwin and Daryl Lefever also produce.
The film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in September and releases in New York City and Los Angeles theaters on May 3rd followed by a wide release shortly after.
