By It’s official, a sequel to last year’s box-office sensation “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is on the way with an April 3rd 2026 release being targeted in the United States.
Many other markets will launch on that date with others to follow throughout April. Shigeru Miyamoto himself made the announcement via Nintendo’s official social media channels this morning.
He says: “This time too, the staff at Illumination and Nintendo are working together. We’re thinking about broadening Mario’s world further, and it’ll have a bright and fun story. We hope you’ll look forward to it!”
He also says they’ll share more details once we’re ready to share more. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic will return as directors and animation will begin soon as the team is currently storyboarding and designing digital sets.
The first film broke numerous box-office records, racking up $1.36 billion in ticket sales and at least $75 million in PVOD revenue.
It ended up being the second highest grossing film worldwide last year, beaten by “Barbie” with both the only films to make over $1 billion.
Critics were a bit mixed on the film, but audiences were seemingly satisfied. Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment (“Despicable Me”) produced the film with Universal Pictures distributing.
