Often when it comes to adapting a written work for the screen, filmmakers will cite one scene or sequence that bringing to life was the key motivator for them to do the project.
In the case of the upcoming Amazon multi-season TV series adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower” fantasy novels, filmmaker Mike Flanagan says it’s one speech that he’s keen to bring to life.
“The Haunting at Hill House,” “Midnight Mass” and “Fall of the House of Usher” creator is famous for his monologues – some of his most famous scenes being just two characters in a room with one delivering a long, emotional and engaging speech to the other.
Speaking at Emerald City Comic Con (via PopVerse, he says a scene in the final book of the series, involving lead character Roland offering a eulogy for another key character, is a scene he is determined to get right:
“Very late in the story, there’s a scene that takes place in a forest where a character is being buried. And there’s a eulogy being given that made me cry the first time that I read it. That one speech just kills me, and I can’t wait for that.”
Flanagan’s first post-Netflix project is is the already shot adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Life of Chuck” as a film with “The Dark Tower” expected to be his next work.
Considered King’s magnum opus, the series has had a troubled history in terms of screen adaptations. Ron Howard and Brian Grazer spearheaded a planned film-and-TV combo version which collapsed before ultimately a cost-effective standalone film that worked as a kind of sequel to the books.
It was produced in 2017 starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey and bombed both critically and commercially. An attempt was made by Amazon to turn it into a major event series with Sam Strike taking on the role of Roland Deschain, but that version was scrapped.
