Over the years, Zack Snyder’s 2007 film “300” has scored various amounts of praise and derision for various elements including its historical inaccuracies. One thing that did stir a lot of discussion back in the day though was how the film was both simultaneously homophobic and homoerotic.
On the one hand, it was a film packed with men in leather codpieces in slow motion and often seemingly worshipping the male physical form. On the other hand, the Spartans here are portrayed as rigorously heterosexual and the Persians are seen as into heavy body grooming under the rule of an effeminate Xerxes.
Cut to seventeen years later and Snyder, speaking on the Joe Rogan podcast, was asked by the host about the notable absence of homoerotic elements from the Spartan warrior life depicted in the film and whether he ever thought about “putting a bunch of gay stuff in there?”
Snyder revealed that a TV series based on the property had been in discussion at one point, one that would tackle that aspect:
“It’s Frank’s book; I made what Frank wrote. Now, in retrospect – and we’ve been talking about doing a [‘300’] series where I really want to, like, introduce those concepts a lot more because I think it’s important.
If we go forward and do more in the ‘300’ universe, I would want to bring that [homoerotic] part in, which I think people – I think it just shakes it up. Like, ‘what?’ Right when you thought you knew like how to feel [about the series], I’m going to make you feel another way.”
Earlier in the conversation, Snyder says as far as he’s concerned “300” is: “one of the gayest movies ever made…. it is incredibly male-centric, male-obsessed… It was important to make sure there was a visceral sexuality to the way the men actually interacted. Regardless of whether you acknowledge it, it’s there.”
Snyder did not indicate if Netflix would be the partner for a “300” series should one go forward. The rights to the project, originally setup at Warners, reverted to Snyder in December last year.
