Timed with the 20th anniversary of the film, Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation have announced that the animated classic “Shrek 2” will return to cinemas on April 12th.

Tickets for the re-release will be available for purchase on March 8th on Fandango and other ticketing sites nationwide. AMC Theaters also announced that they will be screening the animated film for a limited time for just $5.

In the film Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey set off to Far, Far Away to meet Fiona’s mother and father. But not everyone is happy. Shrek and the King find it hard to get along, and there’s tension in the marriage.

The fairy godmother discovers that Shrek has married Fiona instead of her son Prince Charming and sets about destroying their marriage.

Released in May 2004, the film became the highest-grossing animated film of all time (breaking the “Finding Nemo” record) with more than $935 million in box-office worldwide and held the record until “Toy Story 3” in 2010.

In DVD sales and merchandise it is estimated to have earned a further $800 million, making it DreamWorks’ most profitable film to date. Reviews for the film were strong and the movie was a rare animated feature to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.

A fifth “Shrek” movie was also announced last year, but details about it are under wraps.
