Jack Black returns as Po for the fourth “Kung Fu Panda” film and audiences are keen for his return it seems.
Arriving nearly a decade after the last film, “Kung Fu Panda 4” raked in $3.8 million in Thursday previews. The number comes ahead of the film’s opening weekend which is expected to surpass the $50 million mark.
That’s ahead of the $41.3 million opening weekend of the third film, and will be helped by being one of the first family films in cinemas for a while.
It’s likely to come ahead of Denis Villeneueve’s “Dune: Part Two” which opened to a stunning $82.5 million domestically and is expected to take in more than $40 million in its second weekend.
The film has already landed $111 million domestically, meaning in its first week it has already surpassed the entire domestic gross of its predecessor. In seven days it’s also sitting at around $200 million globally.
One other newcomer this week is widely panned horror film “Imaginary” which took $725,000 in Thursday previews and hopes for an opening of $10-14 million.
