Warner Bros. Discovery is shutting down its streaming subsidiary Rooster Teeth after more than twenty years in the business.
The news was announced on March 6th in both a company memo and a blog post on the company’s official site. Jordan Levin, general manager at Rooster Teeth, said in an internal memo:
“Rooster Teeth is shutting down due to challenges facing digital media resulting from fundamental shifts in consumer behavior and monetization across platforms, advertising, and patronage.”
Rooster Teeth’s podcast network, The Roost, will continue to operate with Warner Bros. Discovery apparently looking to sell the podcast network to a potential buyer.
The shutdown process of the rest of Rooster Teeth is expected to take several months. Rooster Teeth started back in 2003 in Texas and had its first hit with the Halo machinima series “Red Vs. Blue” which led to millions of views, DVDs, spin-offs, and merchandise.
In 2021, their primary YouTube channel had nearly ten million subscribers and over 6 billion video views.
