Bob Iger lives in a dream world. We know it is not all his fault, but Disney has been hemorrhaging money for the past few years. According to Bob though, things are looking up.

In a recent interview at the Morgan Stanley event in San Franciso, Iger thinks that the recent “box office drought” caused by the strike is the biggest issue, but he has a lot of plans to turn things around. This includes having to kill things you no longer believe in, he stated:

“You have to kill things you no longer believe in, and that’s not easy in this business, because either you’ve gotten started, you have some sunk costs, or it’s a relationship with either your employees or with the creative community.

It’s not an easy thing, but you got to make those tough calls. We’ve actually made those tough calls. We’ve not been that public about it, but we’ve killed a few projects already that we just didn’t feel were strong enough.”

Can you imagine what Iger didn’t think was “strong enough”? A Luke Skywalker-led Star Wars movie where he trains new Jedi. The Avengers team up and take on a bad guy who’s not been indicted for domestic abuse. A Willow series that actually stars Willow in it.

Iger is Really Helping

Iger said he has been:

“…spending a lot of time with the creators, watching these films, giving detailed notes in these films, engaging in a respectful process that results in improvement.”

Riiiiiiight! Somehow the word respectful seems to have been misused there. I know it’s an older meme now, but I imagine, after watching the movies, his response was:

He talked about superhero fatigue and how that’s not a thing, as Marvel’s first 33 films generated just under $30 billion at the box office. Wow, talk about a blinkered view. Infinity Wars and End Game made just under $3 billion at the box office. That means, other movies made way less than that.

“Not only do you look at the films you’re making, you look at every part of that process, who the directors are, who’s being cast, reading scripts, I personally watch films three to five times with the team and just create a culture of excellence and respect, which is really important with the creative community. And again, the track record speaks for itself.”

The track record speaks for itself? Hasn’t Disney lost over $1 billion at the box office for the past 10 – 12 movies. Star Wars is dead, Indiana Jones is dead, the MCU is now a joke and Willow was so bad, it was deleted from the servers so no one would see it again. Yeah, that’s a hell of a track record.

Bob recently gave himself a $26 million bonus, so things at Disney are fine, according to him.
