If you were a teenage boy in the early 1990s, the days before the internet, life was far from miserable. We were just more creative. Once a week, many of our needs were fulfilled by a glorious slice of televisual ridiculousness. Baywatch.

What started as a semi-serious show set among the lifeguards of Malibu then evolved into an octopus wrestling, shark attacking, speedboat racing, drug-runner thwarting exercise in red swimsuited soft-core handily beamed into your home. Kids today won’t believe us when we tell them about it, and about the slo-mo!

The original show ran from 1989-1999 and then became Baywatch Hawaii from 1999-2001. Hilariously, there was also a spin off that featured lifeguards moonlighting as private investigators called Baywatch Nights in 1995.

We watched it for the plot

We weren’t alone, either. After nearly being canceled, the show became the most syndicated and most-watched TV show on the planet at the time. A true sensation.

Good times.

Now comes the news that FOX has closed a deal for a new version of Baywatch from producer Fremantle. Lara Olsen (90210, Spinning Out) will serve as the showrunner. Original creators Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz, and Gregory J. Bonann will join her as executive producers.

Yes… definitely for the plot

There is already a synopsis:

“Daring ocean rescues, pristine beaches, and iconic red bathing suits are back, along with a whole new generation of Baywatch lifeguards, who navigate complicated, messy personal lives in this action-packed reboot that demonstrates there’s the family you’re born into and the family you find.”

No word yet on any returnees from the original run. David Hasselhoff starred alongside a revolving lineup that included, at various times, Pamela Anderson, Jason Momoa, David Chokachi, Yasmin Bleeth, Alexandra Paul, Carmen Electra, Erika Eleniak, Nicole Eggert, Billy Warlock, Jason Simmons, and David Charvet.
