“Westworld” co-showrunner Jonathan Nolan says the upcoming TV series adaptation of the “Fallout” video game series is trying to be very true to the games.
So much so that, in the latest issue of Total Film magazine, he revealed he had conversations with Bethesda’s Todd Howard early on in the process and a key decision was made.
That decision? The show won’t be like other game-to-film or game-to-series adaptations which essentially take place in their own universe. Rather, this will canonically unfold in the same world of the games.
He also compares it to working with his brother Christopher Nolan on “The Dark Knight” trilogy:
“Fallout, in my career, is closest to the work we did in adapting Batman, where there’s so much storytelling in the Batman universe that there is no canonical version of it, so you’re free to invent your own.
Each of the [Fallout] games is a discrete story – different city, distinct protagonist – within the same mythology. Our series sits in relation to the games as the games sit in relation to each other. It’s almost like we’re Fallout 5. I don’t want to sound presumptuous, but it’s just a non-interactive version of it, right?”
The producing team are also aware of the pressure on his show following the critical and popular success of “The Last of Us” on HBO which finally showed that video game adaptations can be something more with co-showrunner Graham Wagner saying: “Now there’s an expectation of: ‘No, they can actually be great.”
“Fallout” is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on April 12th.
