Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two” pulled in a strong $32.1 million gross on its opening day on Friday – a number that includes $12 million from preview screenings
By the end of Friday, it’s already the biggest opening weekend of the year – beating the $28.6 million three-day haul of “Bob Marley: One Love”.
It’s also not that far away from the $41 million three-day opening haul of the first “Dune” back in October 2021. The big question now is how big will it go for the weekend with the projected opening of $70-80 million now expected to be exceeded.
Another question is how much of ticket sales are expected to come from IMAX, Dolby and other premium large-format screens which are being seen as key to the film’s appeal.
That appeal is strong though. The film has earned an ‘A’ CinemaScore in audience exit polls, suggesting long legs for the film in the coming weeks. It joins the critical reviews which are the best for any wide release this year.
“Dune: Part Two” will hold IMAX screens for three weeks before having to make way for “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” on March 22nd.
“Bob Marley: One Love” will come in second with a $1.9 million take on Friday and a three-day haul expected in the $4 million+ range. Faith-based “Ordinary Angels” will be third with $3.7 million for the weekend.
