British actor Ray Winstone is something of an institution. From Scum all the way through to Sexy Beast, and beyond, he’s a regular fixture on screens. He’s also usually good value on chat shows and in interviews where he doesn’t mince his words and likes to have fun.
His straightforward opinions have been given about his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe recently. He had a villain role in the Scarlett Johansson-led spin-off film Black Widow. This was the last MCU entry to be completed before the pandemic, and it ended up on Disney+ as a day-and-date release when large numbers of movie theaters worldwide were shuttered.
In the interview with the UK’s Radio Times magazine, Winstone says he had issues with the reshoots and specifically the executives who suddenly come out of the woodwork when it is time for reshoots.
“It was fine until you have to do the reshoots. Then you find out that a few producers have come down, and your performance is too much, it’s too strong… That’s the way Marvel works. It can be soul-destroying because you feel like you’re doing great work.
I actually said, ‘You ought to recast it because that was it for me.’ And you end up doing it again because you’re contracted to do it. Otherwise you end up in court. It’s like being kicked in the balls.”
He does say the original production was good fun, and it is the reshoots that sucked the joy out of the experience.
Winstone is about to hit a purple patch in his career, with several projects landing in quick succession – the Millie Bobby Brown-led Damsel, A Bit of Light, and the highly anticipated series adaptation of Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen.
