After “Dune: Part One” was released, composer Hans Zimmer famously continued to write more music for the sci-fi epic, even though he was told to stop.
Zimmer insisted he would keep going, telling the director he would keep writing because he knew “that we will be greenlit for ‘Part Two’” and maybe his work might inspire the director.
So with the film now debuting cinemas and plenty of indication from Villeneuve that a script for a third installment based on the novel “Dune Messiah” is on the way, Zimmer was asked by Variety if he’s already started thinking of music for the third movie.
He responds with a smile “guess who hasn’t stopped writing?” and then later said:
“Denis comes in on the second day of shooting, and wordlessly comes in and puts “Dune: Messiah” on my desk, and I know where we’re going and I know we’re not done.”
Whereas the gap between the first and second “Dune” was two-and-a-half years (it would’ve been two if it weren’t for the strikes), it’s expected a gap between the second and third film will be longer with Villeneuve potentially tackling something else (and smaller) first.
“Dune: Part Two” began its overseas rollout Wednesday in 13 markets with $7.6 million for the day (including previews), making it the No. 1 Hollywood film in each of those markets. The film is heading for an $80-90 million opening weekend domestically and the same again internationally.
