Our Outposters have talked a bit about A.I. here at Last Movie Outpost, pointing to the potential impact it could have on all walks of life. That impact is already being felt in the movie industry. Atlanta is one of the first places to experience this.
Filmmaker Tyler Perry has been planning an $800 million expansion of his studio in Atlanta. It would have added twelve sound stages and numerous other facilities, providing a serious boost to the economy through jobs and support services. Now the plans are on hold indefinitely after Perry got his hands on OpenAI’s new text-to-video model Sora.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Perry says this has changed his view on what is possible:
“I no longer would have to travel to locations. If I wanted to be in the snow in Colorado, it’s text. If I wanted to write a scene on the moon, it’s text, and this AI can generate it like nothing.
If I wanted to have two people in the living room in the mountains, I don’t have to build a set in the mountains, I don’t have to put a set on my lot. I can sit in an office and do this with a computer, which is shocking to me.”
He also admitted he can see the potential negative impacts on people in the industry.
Perry has already made his first use of A.I. technology in two films that are going to be announced shortly. One of these, he says, makes use of it to:
“…avoid ever having to sit through hours of aging makeup”.
He went on to say that many in the industry are still just trying to figure out the tech and its potential, plus potential impacts.
