Universal Pictures’ latest installment of the “Jurassic World” franchise just got an upgrade.
With “Bullet Train” and “Atomic Blonde” filmmaker David Leitch no longer directing the project, the film was racing to find someone to take over the helm.
They’ve now found it with “Godzilla” (2014), “Monsters,” “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and “The Creator” filmmaker Gareth Edwards in talks to direct the project according to THR.
Universal and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners are moving fast on the project which already has a July 2nd 2025 release date set. The film is said to be several drafts in with a script written by David Koepp.
As a result they needed a filmmaker who was experienced with big studio productions, was available quickly and was willing to accept less creative input as the project was far enough along already that filming has to get underway by June.
A short list came up with Edwards’ name quickly rising to the top – a filmmaker who has handled creature features, weathered a tumultuous production, is incredibly efficient with budgets and has no problems working with extensive visual effects.
Spielberg, Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley are producing the film which, though taking place in the same continuity as the earlier films, is likely set years later and won’t involve any of the prior cast.
