Warner Bros. Pictures has pushed back “Parasite” and “Snowpiercer” director Bong Joon-ho’s next feature, the sci-fi thriller “Mickey 17” starring Robert Pattinson, by nearly a year.
The film was originally scheduled for a March 29th release this year, but with no posters, trailers and only one released publicity still thus far – it came as little shock when Warners pulled it from the release calendar in January.
The delay had one immediate knock-on effect with Adam Wingard’s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” moved up two weeks to take over the abandoned March 29th slot.
Now the studio has revealed that “Mickey 17” will open on January 31st 2025, a full ten months later than originally planned.
The film was reportedly impacted by last year’s strikes and other production shifts thus requiring more time in post-production. The new date gives the film an IMAX run, something the previous date wouldn’t have allowed it, and coincides with Lunar New Year.
The story follows Mickey, a disposable employee sent to colonise an ice world, and soon realises that his body can regenerate after death but with his memories still preserved.
Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, Steven Yeun and Naomi Ackie co-star in the film based on Edward Ashton’s novel. It marks Bong’s first feature since “Parasite” became the first non-English language movie to win best picture at the Oscars.
