HBO has announced that the season finale of “True Detective: Night Country,” the fourth season in its acclaimed anthology series, pulled in 3.2 million cross-platform viewers on Sunday night.

That’s a seasonal high for the series which starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis. The series is so far averaging 12.7 million cross-platform viewers across its run – making it the most-watched season of the “True Detective” series to date.

HBO adds that Sunday’s finale performed 55% higher than the third season finale, and the series as a whole has remained the top title on Max since the fourth season debuted.

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR SEASON FINALE

Showrunner Issa Lopez has also spoken about the show’s ambiguous ending, telling Deadline its up to the viewer to decide the fate of Navarro (Reis) and if she returned from her walkabout:

“I’m not saying that she’s alive, and I’m certainly not saying that she’s dead. I very carefully crafted this as an ink block test for you to discover yourself as an audience member.

The Aboriginal people in Australia go walkabout, find themselves and then come back, which is I think is what Kali embraced [for the character]. However, there is a chance that she is also going to be with the women before her to visit them. You can read it both ways and it’s up to you to interpret which one fulfills your heart.”
